  • How early should you prep for storms?

Don’t wait until a storm is headed your way to think about your roof and gutters. The best time to prepare your home is weeks — or even months — before severe weather arrives. A small roofing issue or clogged gutter can quickly turn into major water damage during heavy rain and high winds. Routine inspections and preventative maintenance help protect your home, your investment, and your peace of mind.

Homeowners should start storm prep well before a storm is actually in the forecast. A good rule is:

Year-round maintenance: Keep your home storm-ready at all times.

1–3 months before storm season: Handle major inspections and repairs.

3–7 days before a predicted storm: Complete final preparations and secure the property.

24 hours before impact: Focus only on safety and last-minute protection.

    Ideal Storm Prep Timeline

When it comes specifically to gutters and roofing, homeowners should ideally prep 30–90 days before storm season and not wait until a storm is approaching.

By the time severe weather is in the forecast:

    contractors are booked out,

    materials can become delayed,

and small issues can quickly turn into major water damage.

Why Early Roof & Gutter Prep Matters

Your roof and gutter system are the home’s first line of defense against:

    heavy rain

    wind uplift

    overflowing water

    fascia rot

    foundation erosion

    interior leaks

Even a minor loose shingle or clogged gutter can become a costly repair during a major storm.

    Recommended Timeline for Homeowners

    2–3 Months Before Storm Season

    Homeowners should:

Have the roof professionally inspected - Pro Tip:   (GutterGuys / Roofing Guys offers Free Inspections)

Check for lifted shingles, exposed nails, and flashing issues

    Clean gutters and downspouts

Make sure gutters are securely fastened

Inspect for sagging gutters or poor drainage

Trim tree limbs hanging over the roof

Address small leaks before they spread

    1–2 Weeks Before a Storm

Remove debris from valleys and gutters

Confirm downspouts are draining away from the foundation

    Secure loose gutter sections

Check attic spaces for signs of moisture

Inspect metal roofing fasteners if applicable
